Just came home from Ultra Music Festival Day 2.

We got there at Noon, and I was all excited to see Hercules and Love Affair until they decided to start 40 minutes late and play a shittastic set. Great way to start the day! Then, the Presets brought in a huuuge crowd for 2 PM, and they were splendid as usual.

Late of the Pier was surprisingly good, if you look past the strung out keyboardist and the lead singer’s unusually high vocals.  They closed with “Bathroom Gurgle,” a fave. We took a break and I had an arepa and a bottle of water, totaling a mere TEN DOLLARS. Oh, and that was after the $5 fee at the ATM.

LA Riots prepped Cut Copy, which was very nice. Then, Cut Copy sung their Australian hearts out, and oddly began with “Hearts on Fire,” their usual closer. I was starting to feel very deaf, dirty and dead-tired at this point, but there were still 6 hours to go!

We watched Booka Shade from far away, then Moby from far away, and THEN, I had a beef empanada.

Crystal Castles was fucking absurd, but I’m glad they played “Crimewaves,” a more soothing song on their setlist.  MSTRKRFT followed immediately with a great set, as they smoked and sipped from a fifth of whiskey on stage. I would’ve seen more of their set had I not decided to go wait for the Prodigy. We got there right at 9 when they were expected to start, but they didn’t get on stage until 9:30, and riots then ensued.

We would’ve stayed for Deadmau5 and Simian Mobile Disco, but instead we cut our losses and headed home at the ripe hour of 9:50 PM.

Not worth the $125 ticket for the festival experience itself, but if you add up all of the costs of seeing individual artists, it’s kinda worth it for that.  Ultra Music Festival is probably the most poorly produced festival I’ve seen.  All they had to eat was fried food, and water was five fucking dollars. When you start to question whether you should buy a bottle of water or dehydrate to save money, there is a biiiig problem.
